Density in additive manufacturing


AM parts are often more porous than conventionally manufactured parts because of the layer-by-layer build process used in 3D printing.

Significance of density for AM COMPONENTS

This process can result in incomplete fusion between the layers, creating internal voids and pores that can weaken the mechanical strength and stability of the part. Additionally, the build environment, such as temperature and humidity, can also affect the porosity of the final part. Furthermore, some 3D printing processes, such as powder bed fusion, use powders as the raw material, which can result in trapped particles in the final part. In contrast, conventional manufacturing methods, such as casting, forging, and machining, generally have less inherent porosity due to the material consolidation that occurs during these processes.
